When it comes to naming a , some spend the full nine months mulling over their options, while others pick a name out early on. However, one woman has shared her concerns over the moniker she and her fiancé have their hearts set on after hearing how others reacted to it.
Taking to , she explained how she immigrated from Poland and he from Kazakhstan – and they each wanted to incorporate a piece of their history into their son's name. She said: "We decided on the name Wojciech because it was my great-grandfather’s name and my fiancé is a huge soccer fan.
"We’re in a group for expecting (something like a mummy and me group but you can join before your child is born. I didn’t find a good translation) and at the last meeting the topic of baby names came up.
"I explained the name we have chosen and while most of the others said that they liked it, some were apparently concerned about the pronunciation and one of them asked if we were completely set on that name."
It was at this point when one of the parents asked whether she was worried about her son being bullied about his name because it's not common in this country.
She said: "I told her that we aren’t because the pronunciation is not as difficult as it looks and he would probably go by Wojtek anyway.
"She doubled down again and asked if we had discussed any other options. I told her we did, we also thought about Przemysław and Mikołaj."
However, this conversation has been playing on her mind – and now she wants to know whether she has reason to be concerned.
She added: "I didn’t say it in a friendly way because she was pissing me off and after we got home my fiancé told me I should’ve just left it alone and ignored her comments."
Commenting on her post, one user said: "Phonetically speaking, how is the name pronounced? I think the pronunciation is more important than the name itself."
Another user added: "I don't think he will get a lot of bullying over his name. It all depends on what words creative kids can find that sound similar.
"But he will get some laughter and ribbing every time he has a new person doing a roll call who can't figure out how to pronounce his name. Phonics is going to fail with this one."
A third user said: "Wojciech is a pretty common name even outside of Poland. I know three people with that name.
"It's also famous because of Wojciech Fangor, and Wojtek the bear. Plenty of famous people with the name. These people are just uncultured."
